Location of the city of Beckum in the Warendorf district | ||
The city of Beckum ( Low German Biäkem ) is a middle district town in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia and has about 37,000 inhabitants.
Beckum is the namesake for a small mountain range in the Münsterland, the Beckum Mountains .
geography
Expansion of the urban area
The area of the city of Beckum has a north-south extension of 12.8 km and an east-west extension of 12.3 km. The height above NN is in the range from 84.5 to 164 m.
Neighboring communities
Starting clockwise in the north, Beckum borders on Ennigerloh , Oelde , Wadersloh , Lippetal and Ahlen . The southern border of the urban area is also the border with the Soest district and the Arnsberg administrative district .
City structure
Beckum consists of the four districts (as of 2018):
Center of Westphalia
Depending on the calculation basis used, the center of Westphalia is south of the city of Beckum in the Unterberg farming community on the border with Lippborg , Lippetal municipality, or already in Lippborg.
history
The earliest evidence of human settlement in the Beckum area comes from the Neolithic Age , from which the Beckum-Dalmer gallery grave south of the city has been preserved. In the early Middle Ages, the area around Beckum was populated by Germanic tribes . Several grave finds from the period AD 600–800 testify to this, as well as a rampart south of Beckum. In 1959 a princely grave was uncovered during construction work . Rich grave accessories such as horse skeletons and valuable weapons were found in it.
Beckum was first mentioned in 1134 as parrochia Bikeheim and in 1224 it was first designated as a city. The name is derived from the name Beckhem (Bachheim or Heim an Bächen), which is due to the confluence of three brooks in the urban area. The three brooks Kollenbach , Siechenbach and Lippbach , reproduced in the city's coat of arms, make up the Werse , which has its origin in Beckum. The city was surrounded with a wall to protect it against enemy troops and raids from other cities in the Middle Ages . The Feldmark , the agriculturally used area around the city, was also protected by double to triple ramparts. The fortifications were supplemented by four city gates and 22 watchtowers, of which a defensive tower of the city wall and the so-called Soestwarte have been preserved. The latter is now available to visitors as a viewing tower and, thanks to its location on the Höxberg, allows a wide view of the surrounding area.
According to legend, Beckum is said to be identical to the town of Schilda , the home of the Schild citizens ( Beckum attacks ).
Thanks to a strategically favorable location at the crossroads of two trade routes, Beckum already gained some wealth in the Middle Ages . Numerous merchants and craftsmen settled in the city, which was fortified by a wall. In the later Middle Ages Beckum became a member of the Hanseatic League . The first mention of these trade relations comes from 1433.
In connection with the so-called Spanish winter of 1598/99 , Beckum was taken by Spanish troops under the command of Admiral Mendoza . During the Thirty Years War , the city was also occupied and looted several times.
Through these wars, epidemics ( plague 1635) and devastating fires (1655, 1657 and 1734), in which a large part of the city was destroyed, the city became impoverished. From the 17th century until 1942 there was evidence of a permanent Jewish community in Beckum.
The economy only gradually recovered from the 19th century. In 1872 the first cement works was built in Beckum , followed by numerous others. The cheap raw material deposits ( marl ), the proximity to the Ruhr area and the connection to the new trunk line of the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1847 made Beckum one of the most important cement districts in the world. Today there are still two large cement works in Beckum: LafargeHolcim WestZement GmbH and Phoenix Zementwerke Krogbeumker GmbH & Co. KG.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the mining of strontianite was added as an industry. At that time, the Münsterland was the only deposit for strontianite in the world. The mineral was needed in the sugar industry as a catalyst for molasses desugarization. However, the demand for strontianite only lasted a few years. After the cheaper celestine was used as a substitute, the mostly small pits ceased operations.
The city of Beckum was largely spared from being destroyed by bombing raids during World War II . On April 1, 1945, the city was handed over to the advancing American forces by the commandant Rudolf Dunker without a fight. There are also a few bunkers in the city that are occasionally open to visitors.
In the period from 1816 to 1974 Beckum was a district town (see Beckum district ); However, it lost this status in the course of the municipal reorganization to Warendorf . The former license plate BE has been available again since April 2014.
Incorporations
On July 1, 1969, the parishes of Beckum and Vellern were incorporated. On January 1, 1975, Neubeckum was added.

Culture and sights
Buildings
Beckum has several architectural and art-historical sights.
- In the city center, directly on the market square, is the Old Town Hall , first mentioned in 1441 , which was probably preceded by a smaller structure from the 13th century. Its core is likely to date from the 15th century. The originally eaves-standing building with side stepped gables and pointed arcades was raised by one storey in 1879. At that time the neo-Gothic stepped gable was also built , which was considerably simplified in 1937. On the front of the market there are copies of two stone sculptures of the city patrons St. Stephanus and St. Sebastian. The originals (created around 1500), presumably from the circle of Heinrich Brabender , are housed inside today. The city museum has been located here since 1986 . To the west of the town hall is directly connected to the former city cellar building, which is also provided with an archway. Today it houses the pharmacy on the market .
- Behind the town hall is the provost church of St. Stephanus (today's shape from the 13th century). This largest church in Beckum houses the Prudentia shrine , the most important sacred treasure in the city. It is a golden reliquary from the 1230s. Originally dedicated to the church patrons Stephanus and Sebastian as well as Fabian, the relics of the martyr Prudentia were transferred to him in 1881 , and the name has been there ever since. The shrine is probably the most valuable of its kind in all of Westphalia. Also of importance is the historical Klais organ with 60 registers (pneumatic cone chest organ from 1913, restored in 1984 by the company Stockmann, new renovated 2012 by the builders Klais occasion of the centenary in 2013.). It is also worth mentioning the twelve-part bell in the tower of the provost church, which is supplemented by two clock chimes in a dormer and a carillon (twelve-part).
- The remains of the former Augustinian convent of Blumenthal can be found on Südstrasse (No. 21) . Originally located to the west of the city gates, it was moved to the city in 1451. The chapel was consecrated in 1463. In the great city fire of 1657, the entire monastery complex was almost completely destroyed. In 1814 the monastery was finally closed. Of the buildings demolished in 1845, only the former dormitory remained, which was renovated from 2007 to 2009 and has been used as a home and family archive since August 15, 2009.
- The former post office at the entrance to Nordstrasse was built in 1857/58. The late classicist building with a three-axis central projection and outside staircase was extensively restored in 1980/81.
- Due to three city fires (1655, 1657 and 1734) only a few older residential buildings remained in the inner city. The house Linnenstrasse 7 ( Ackerbürgerhaus restaurant ), a half-timbered hallway house from the second half of the 17th century, dates directly from the time after the first two major fires. Most of the other representatives of this type, however, emerged later. B. Weststrasse 19 from 1785.
- On the west fire market (actually the west front of the market) was in 1886 Kreisständehaus built. The building, built in the neo-Gothic style, served as the seat of the district administration and is still very well preserved today.
- Nearby is the square Buddenturm , the last of 22 defensive towers that were formerly part of the medieval city fortifications . It has been rebuilt several times and now serves as a home parlor. The Soestwarte on the Höxberg is one of the last examples of once the Feldmark surrounding Landwehr .
- The Jewish cemetery is located in the area of the former ramparts, directly outside the former city wall. It was first mentioned in a document in 1690. Several gravestones from the 18th to 20th centuries can be found here.
- In 1938, during the construction of the Reichsautobahn between Beckum and Oelde in the Hesseler farmers' community (Vellern district), the Weg Hesseler overpass was built, the first prestressed concrete bridge over a motorway in Germany. It was dismantled in 2012 and rebuilt as a memorial at the nearby Vellern rest area.
- Beckum telecommunications tower , one of the oldest reinforced concrete telecommunications towers in Germany. It was built in 1952 by the Deutsche Bundespost for the television transmission route Hamburg – Cologne ( radio relay ) of the then NWDR .

carnival
As a stronghold of the Westphalian carnival, the annual Rose Monday parade is known far beyond the city limits. In 1895 the largest Rose Monday procession in Westphalia ran in Beckum with nine cars. As more and more cars were built and clubs were founded in the following years, in 2012 it was already 42 cars and 43 foot groups and a spectator number of more than 20,000. The symbol of the Beckum Carnival has been the Rumskedi tomcat for many years. It represents a hunched, black tomcat. A car of the carnival procession was built for him a few years ago. Since it splashes with water, it is a special attraction for the spectators of the train. A carnival exhibition in the town museum provides information about this tradition all year round.
Rose Monday procession 2009
Due to a serious accident during the storming of the town hall, in which the city prince and two court marshals were injured, the Rose Monday procession was postponed to Pentecost Sunday at short notice. There were over 60,000 visitors.
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Rail transport
The Neubeckum station is located on the -Minden Hamm railway line . The RE 6 " Rhein-Weser-Express " Cologne / Bonn Airport - Düsseldorf - Dortmund - Hamm - Bielefeld - Minden ( DB Regio NRW ) and the RB 69 " Ems-Börde-Bahn " Münster -Hamm stop at Neubeckum station every hour –Bielefeld ( eurobahn ), so that there is a total of about half an hourly service.
In the future, the two existing lines are to be replaced by the RRX 4 and RRX 6 lines of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express .
Furthermore, the non-electrified Münster – Warstein railway of the Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn (WLE) runs through the Beckum urban area. This is only used by freight trains and primarily serves to supply the local cement works with pure limestone from Warstein . The resumption of passenger traffic on the section between Münster and Sendenhorst, which was discontinued in 1975, has now been decided and is expected to take place in 2024. A feasibility study was commissioned for reactivating the section from Sendenhorst via Beckum.
Road traffic
Beckum has a junction on the A 2 Oberhausen - Hanover - Berlin.
The B 58 ( Straelen - Langenberg ) and the B 475 ( Emsdetten - Soest ) cross the city.
Bus transport
Since the district of Neubeckum and thus also the train station is about 5 km away from the district of Beckum, there is a separate bus station in Beckum, which is regularly served by regional buses, city buses and an express bus line. Regional buses run from the bus station to Lippetal , Wadersloh , Lippstadt , Oelde , Warendorf , Ennigerloh , Ahlen and Hamm . Two lines connect Beckum with Neubeckum. There is an hourly express bus to Münster via Neubeckum, Ahlen-Vorhelm and Sendenhorst . On weekends, the timetable is supplemented by two night bus routes to Münster and Lippstadt, and in summer by a bicycle bus route to Münster. The bus transport is carried out by the regional transport company Münsterland (RVM).
As the city estimates that the bus station was too far from the city center (approx. 500 m), it should be moved a few meters to the south in 2011. However, this was prevented by a citizens' initiative to preserve Marienplatz, to which the bus station was to be relocated. Instead, the old square was rebuilt. The innovations included, among other things, an expansion of the bicycle parking spaces.
