New Hanseatic League
The New Hanseatic League or the city union DIE HANSE was founded in 1980 in Zwolle as a “community of life and culture for cities across borders”. The aim of the multilateral community partnership is not only to promote trade but also to support tourism. It is intended to continue the tradition of the Hanseatic League of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , which was never officially dissolved.
organization
Upon request, the New Hanseatic League accepts cities that were members of the historical Hanseatic League or that housed offices or branches of the Hanseatic League. The highest body is an assembly of delegates in which each city has one vote. The assembly of delegates has a quorum regardless of the number of cities represented and decides with a majority of those present. The assembly of delegates decides on changes to the statutes, admission and exclusion of cities, election of the presidium and the approval of projects.
The Presidium consists of the President and four representatives, who should come from at least three countries. According to the statutes, the president, who bears the title foreman , is the mayor of the city of Lübeck , since 2018 Jan Lindenau . The representatives are elected by the delegates' assembly; currently (as of November 16, 2018) these are Inger Harlevi , the President of the Provincial Parliament of Gotland Island (for the city of Visby ), Andries P. Heidema , the Mayor of Deventer , Olga Popova , Deputy Mayor of the City of Veliky Novgorod , and Eckhard Ruthemeyer , Mayor of Soest .
The commission comprises the representatives of five German cities as well as one city from each country in which there are active members of the New Hanseatic League (currently Belgium , England , Estonia , Finland , France , Iceland , Latvia , Lithuania , the Netherlands , Norway , Poland , Russia , Scotland , Sweden and Belarus ). She prepares the Hanseatic Days and suggests candidates for the Presidium.
The Hanseatic office is responsible for the management and is located in Lübeck.
Hanseatic Day
An essential task of the new Hanseatic League is the awarding of the Hanseatic Days and their implementation. Any member city can apply to host it to highlight its history and cultural and economic significance. The delegates' assembly decides on the award on the recommendation of the commission.
