Straupe (formerly: Lielstraupe , German: (Groß-) Roop ) is a former Hanseatic city in Latvia , north of Riga. Straupe is the capital of the municipality of Straupe and an administrative district (Pārgaujas novads).
history
In the chronicle of Henry of Latvia in 1227 the Livonian place "Vidumaa" appears. A settlement was built around a castle of the Bishop of Riga , which was part of the Hanseatic League in 1325 and received Riga city rights in 1374 . At that time Straupe was the fourth largest city in Latvia. In the wars of the following century the area was devastated and the castle lost its importance.
- The Castle wholesale Roop ( Lielstraupes pils ) was probably built as a castle in the 13th century after a fire in the revolutionary year of 1905 in the style of Baroque restored . From 1963 until the end of 2017 the building was used as a clinic.
- During the Battle of Cēsis in 1919, Estonian units fended off an attack by parts of the Iron Division here.
Pārgaujas novads
Since 2009 the municipalities Raiskums (1604 inhabitants), Stalbe (1228 inhabitants) and Straupe (1412 inhabitants) form an administrative community (Pārgaujas novads) with a total of 4244 inhabitants (July 1, 2014). The administration building is in Straupe.
