List of Archbishops of Riga
The Archbishops of Riga shared the power of government of the city of Riga with the council until 1561 and ruled over the Archdiocese of Riga .
Coin finds
They had the right to mint and minted Livonian pennies and marks. The coins found hidden in the Soviet era are now an important historical source, and historical scholarship also has several chronicles ( Heinrich's Livonian Chronicle , Saxo Grammaticus and the Livonian Rhyming Chronicle ) and good archaeological findings.
Bishops of Uexküll and Riga
The series of bishops begins with the first two bishops from Uexküll (Latvia). The first bishop of Riga was Albert von Buxthoeven (1199 to 1229), as we know from coin finds and the Chronicle of Henry of Latvia. Since the founding of Riga in 1201, Albert had his seat in the new city in Livonia (now Latvia ). The Diocese of Riga was subordinated to Visby in Gotland . The four dioceses of Prussia or East Prussia ( Pomesania , Kulmerland , Samland and Warmia ) have been under the Archbishop of Riga since the Archdiocese of Riga was established in 1255.
