Johann II of Blankenfelde
Johannes Blankenfeld (* around 1471 in Berlin ; † September 9, 1527 in Torquemada , Castile ) was Archbishop of Riga .
Life
Blankenfeld comes from the Blankenfelde patrician family in Berlin . He was the son of the Berlin merchant and mayor Thomas von Blankenfelde and studied law in Leipzig , Frankfurt (Oder) and Bologna . After completing his doctorate on August 2, 1503, he became a legal professor in Frankfurt (Oder), in 1507 rector of the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt and then served as general procurator at the papal curia from 1512 to 1514 in the service of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order , Albrecht I. from Brandenburg-Ansbach .
Through the favor of Leo X , John became Bishop of Reval in 1514 , Bishop of Dorpat in 1518 and Archbishop of Riga in 1524 , appointed by Clement VII.
Due to the Reformation , a large part of the population in Riga was now Protestant and did not support Johannes, who was an opponent of this movement. Wolter von Plettenberg , master of the order in Livonia , supported the Reformation in order, among other things, to gain more independence from the secular archbishopric. In 1525 there was a break between Johannes and Plettenberg over rule in the country. When Johannes started negotiations with Sigismund of Poland , Plettenberg had him captured. Johannes placed himself under the protection of the Teutonic Order, which confirmed Plettenberg as head of the country. John then traveled to Spain to seek support from Emperor Charles V , but he died shortly before he had reached his destination.
