List of the bishops of Reval
Even before the founding of the diocese in 1219, bishops were active in Estonia . Bishop Fulco , missionary bishop, came in 1170 but left Estonia again in 1179. Dietrich von Thorreide also mission bishop 1210–1218. Hermann von Apeldern (Buxthoeven), Bishop of Leal , moved his bishopric to Dorpat in 1224 .
Ostradus is named as Bishop of Wierland in 1215 , followed by Dietrich von Minden OFM in 1247 . In 1265 the diocese of Wierland was united with the diocese of Reval .
On June 29, 1560 Moritz von Wrangel sold the diocese of Reval to Magnus Duke of Holstein , who became the first Protestant bishop of Reval. The tradition and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Reval was thus extinguished and has not been restored to this day. In the city of Reval, which had already introduced the Reformation in 1524, Protestant superintendents had been in office since 1533 and, from 1565, superintendents for the North Estonian land area. From 1638 they carried the title of bishop. The Diocese of Reval was integrated as a diocese into the structure of the Swedish Church and from 1693 also included the church system in the city of Reval.
With the conquest by Russia in 1710, the Lutheran diocese of Reval also ended. During the Russian period, superintendents were again in office, and general superintendents from 1833. The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church , newly founded in 1917, reintroduced the office of bishop (archbishop since 1949).
