Jasper Linde OT (also Jaspar Linde ; Caspar Linde ; * in Kamen ( Westphalia ); † June 29, 1524 in Ronneburg ) was Archbishop of Riga from 1509 until his death in 1524 .

Life

Jasper Linde probably came from a Kamen council family. His brother Gert Linde was a vassal of the Archbishopric of Riga and is documented as bailiff of Kokenhusen in 1497 .

It is not known at which university Jasper Linde obtained a master's degree. Since 1491 or earlier he belonged to the Riga Cathedral Chapter , which was incorporated into the Teutonic Order . At the same time he was pastor of the St. Petri Church in Riga . In 1496 he rose to the position of deputy provost in the cathedral chapter, and from 1497 he held the office of dean .

After the death of Rigar Archbishop Michael Hildebrand , Jasper Linde was elected as his successor by the cathedral chapter on February 18, 1509. He accepted the papal confirmation on May 25th. J. personally at the Curia in Rome. Like his predecessor, he had a good relationship with the order master Wolter von Plettenberg . Although he ruled his archbishopric in peaceful times, he had the two main castles of the archbishopric, Kokenhusen and Ronneburg , expanded. Near the border with Russia, he initiated the construction of Marienhausen Castle , which replaced a wooden fortification. In pastoral matters he held visitations , prelate meetings and synods and pursued the goal of building a regional church in Livonia. He campaigned for reforms several times in the state parliaments. The establishment of a higher school for the training of clergymen, which he wanted, could not be realized because the estates rejected this project for cost reasons. Together with the bishops of the three Livonian suffragan he obtained in 1521 in Worms the regalia . Although he rejected Luther's teaching , he could not prevent its spread in the city of Riga. Presumably because he was old and in poor health, in 1522 he regulated the distribution of the goods belonging to the cathedral chapter among the canons. At the same time he confirmed the privileges of the knighthood of the archbishopric. With his consent, the cathedral chapter elected Johannes Blankenfeld as Jasper Linde's coadjutor and successor in 1523 , although Jasper Linde remained in office until his death on July 29, 1524. His body was buried in the Riga Cathedral.
