Johannes von Lune (also Johann von Lune ; as Archbishop of Riga Johann [es] I ; † 1284 ) was Archbishop of Riga from 1273 to 1284 .

Life

Johannes von Lune, whose origin is not known, is first recorded for the year 1269 as Canon and Cellerar of Riga. After the death of Archbishop Albert Suerbeer , he was presumably elected as his successor by the Riga Cathedral Chapter in March 1273 . On May 21, 1373, Pope Gregory X instructed the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Dünamünde as well as the prior of the Dominicans and the Guardian of the Riga Franciscans to check the elector's suitability and then to send him to the curia , where he was given papal confirmation should. After he received this before November 5, 1274 in Lyon , the episcopal ordination took place by the Cardinal Bishop of Porto e S. Rufina, the Cistercian John of Toledo. In 1275 Johannes von Lune returned to Riga via Lübeck .

During the absence of the elected but not yet confirmed Johannes von Lune, the Teutonic Order was granted jurisdiction over the city of Riga by the Roman-German King Rudolf I , which until then belonged to the Archbishopric . In 1275 Johannes von Lune confirmed the previous privileges to the Lübeck merchants. In 1283 he confirmed the change from the Augustinian rule to the rule of the Teutonic Order to the cathedral chapter in Kulm . He probably maintained a good relationship with the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order. He died in 1284; The place of death and burial are not known.
