The diocese of Pelplin ( Latin Dioecesis Pelplinensis , Polish Diecezja pelplińska ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Pelplin in Poland . It has existed since 1992 and emerged from the Kulm diocese .

history

Diocese of Kulm

In 1243/46 the bishopric of Kulm was founded in Prussia , the seat of the cathedral chapter was Culmsee (Chełmża), the bishops resided in Löbau (Lubawa). The city of Culm (Chełmno) was never the seat of the diocese. The diocese was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Riga .

In 1824 the cathedral chapter and the bishopric was moved to Pelplin. In 1829 the seminary was also moved there. Since autumn 1939, after the German occupation, over 200 clergymen of the diocese were killed , including almost the entire cathedral chapter and teachers of the seminary and the Collegium Marianum .

Diocese of Pelplin

On March 25, 1992, Pope John Paul II founded the new diocese Pelplin with the bull Totus tuus Poloniae populus . It was formed from large parts of the previous diocese of Kulm. The other parts (including the city of Chełmno (Kulm)) went to the diocese of Toruń . Both were subordinated to the Archdiocese of Danzig as suffragan dioceses .

Cathedral remained the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin of the former Cistercian monastery .
