Jan Bernard Szlaga (born May 24, 1940 in Gotenhafen ; † April 25, 2012 in Starogard Gdański ) was a Polish theologian and biblical scholar and Roman Catholic Bishop of Pelplin .

Life

Jan Szlaga studied at the seminary in Pelplin and the Catholic University of Lublin . He was on 2 June 1963 by the Chelmno Bishop Kazimierz Kowalski Jósef for priests ordained . From 1965 to 1969 he studied biblical studies at the Catholic University of Lublin. He was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD . In 1972 and 1973 he was a research assistant at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He completed his habilitation in 1976 with a paper on the New Covenant of Christ based on the Letter to the Hebrews .

From 1969 to 1988 he worked at the Catholic University of Lublin. He was vice dean and in 1984 dean of the university's theological faculty. Between 1984 and 1988 he was Vice President of the KU Lublin. He was also a lecturer at the seminars in Lublin and Pelplin as well as at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń . From 1991 to 2001 he was a professor at the University of Gdansk .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Mascula and auxiliary bishop in Kulm on June 13, 1988 . He was ordained bishop by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp , twelve days later. Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, Archbishop Francesco Colasuonno , and the Bishop of Kulm, Marian Przykucki . “Parare vias Domini” (Prepare the way of the Lord) was his episcopal motto.

With the restructuring and renaming of the diocese to the diocese of Pelplin by the bull Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus on March 25, 1992, Szlaga was appointed the first bishop of Pelplin.

In June 1999 Jan Szlaga hosted Pope John Paul II's visit to Pelplin. He renewed the traditional Collegium Marianum and took care of the restoration of the cathedral. He was chairman of the Scientific Council of the Polish Bishops' Conference . He was a member of the Council for Ecumenism and the Episcopal Commission for Dialogue with the Polish Ecumenical Council.

Szlaga published several books and essays. He was the editor of a number of joint works such as General Introduction to Scripture (Posen, 1986), in which, among other things, he developed his own biblical hermeneutics.

Awards

He has been honored several times for his work, including in 2009 with the Order of Polonia Restituta for "for outstanding achievements in research and teaching, for his work in pastoral care and for his commitment to helping people in need".

He became an honorary citizen of Chojnice (1994), Starogard Gdański (1997), Gmina Pelplin (2001) and Gdynia (2008). In 2010 he was honored with the Cross of Merit of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Za Zasługi dla Województwa Pomorskiego .
