The Boston Globe is a liberal daily based in Boston , Massachusetts . It is considered the most important newspaper in New England and one of the most respected newspapers in the USA.

history

Boston Globe editorial building

The Boston Globe was founded in 1872 by six Boston businessmen, including Charles H. Taylor and Eben Jordan, who alone invested $ 150,000 . The first edition appeared on March 4, 1872 and cost four cents. In the beginning, the newspaper only appeared Monday through Friday. A Saturday edition was published from 1877. From 1878 to 1979 there was also a daily afternoon edition called The Boston Evening Globe .

The newspaper was published by a private company until 1973, which then went public under the name Affiliated Publications . The newspaper continued to be operated by the heirs of Charles H. Taylor, who had taken over the management of the newspaper in 1873. In 1993, Affiliated Publications was bought by the New York Times Company for $ 1.1 billion .

Because of the ongoing crisis in the US newspaper industry and because of the current economic crisis, the NYT Co. urged the newspaper's 13 unions to save $ 20 million within one month by the end of April 2009. Otherwise the sheet will be closed, as otherwise a loss of 85 million dollars as a result of the economic crisis can be expected by the end of the year. After tough negotiations, the NYT Co. agreed with the unions on the following savings: 8.4% pay cut for most employees, five days of unpaid vacation, no pension increases, a 40-hour week instead of the previous 37.5 hours as well the elimination of various gratuities such as life insurance, eye care costs and training reimbursement. Particularly contested were the guarantees of lifelong employment for 190 members of the Boston Newspaper Guild journalists' union , who also fell victim to the austerity measures. Media observers said they were relieved that the newspaper had to be closed for the time being, but the employees themselves were less confident.

In September 2002 the newspaper had a daily circulation of 467,745 copies, in 2008 the daily circulation was 350,605 copies and fell to 303,000 copies in 2009. In 2019 it was only 230,756 copies. The editors of the Boston Globe have won a total of 21 Pulitzer Awards , including nine during the New York Times Co.

In August 2013, the New York Times sold the Globe, its local editions and its marketing agency to the Boston entrepreneur and owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team , billionaire John W. Henry . The purchase price was under $ 70 million, a fraction of the $ 1.1 billion the NYT paid in 1993. Since the New York Times Company retained the Boston Globe's pension payments in the contract, which are estimated at about $ 110 million, the NYT ultimately paid $ 40 million to sell the Globe.

International attention

The newspaper gained media attention beyond the borders of the USA in 2016 (similar to the Washington Post in 1976 with the filming of the Watergate affair The Untouchables ) by filming the publication and exposition of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Boston with the Film drama Spotlight .

In August 2018, the Globe called on all US media to take a stand against President Donald Trump's accusation that they were distributing “fake news” and that they were harmful to freedom of expression in the US. Around 350 media responded to the call, according to the newspaper. However, some media also doubted the effect of the action. As the Baltimore Sun wrote : “While we agree that labeling journalists as 'enemies of the American people' and labeling journalism as 'fake news' not only harms our industry but is also destructive to our democracy, nourishes a coordinated one Reaction from independent - or, to put it somewhat boldly, 'mainstream' news organizations - a narrative that we have somehow allied against this Republican president.
