Collegium Marianum

The Collegium Marianum Liceum Katolickie im. Jana Pawła II. Is a school in Pelplin in Poland . It goes back to a tradition since 1836.

history

In 1836 a cathedral and singing school was founded in Pelplin, which has been the seat of the bishops of Culm since 1824. She was supposed to train acolytes and choirboys for masses in the cathedral . The school was housed in a building (tavern?) Of the dissolved Cistercian monastery. Around 1861 another part of the monastery building was moved into.

In 1864 it was converted into an episcopal high school and named Collegium Marianum . It was the only middle school in West Prussia in which the Polish language and culture were decisive. Several important Polish social figures were trained in the Collegium Marianum. In 1836 there were six students, in 1858 there were already 128.

After the Polish independence in 1919 it became a middle school and since 1927 a high school . After the German occupation in 1939 the school was closed and many teachers were killed afterwards.

In 1946 the bishop established a private mixed high school and lyceum, which was nationalized in 1951. In 1961 the school was closed.

Since 2000 there is again a high school ( Liceum Katolickie ) there.
