Tarahuasi archaeological site

The Limatambo district is located in the Anta Province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​506 km². The 2017 census counted 7255 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8,413, in 2007 it was 9,076. The district administration is located in the small town of Limatambo, at an altitude of 2577  m , with 1562 inhabitants (as of 2017). Limatambo is 32 km west of the provincial capital Anta and 50 km west of the regional capital Cusco . The archaeological site of Tarahuasi is 1.5 km northeast of Limatambo.

Geographical location

The Limatambo district is located in the Andes in the west of the Anta province. In the north rises the Cordillera Vilcabamba with the 6264  m high Salcantay . The Río Apurímac forms the southern district boundary.

The Limatambo district is bordered to the west by the district Mollepata , on the north by the district Ollantaytambo ( Urubamba Province ), in the northeast on the district Huarocondo , on the east by the district Ancahuasi , in the southeast of the district Chinchaypujio and the south by the district Curahuasi ( Abancay Province , Apurímac Region ).
