The province of Abancay is one of seven provinces in the Apurímac administrative region in southern Peru . The province extends over an area of ​​3447 km². The 2017 census counted 110,520 inhabitants in the province of Abancay. In 1993 and 2007 the population was 95,092 and 96,064, respectively. The provincial capital is Abancay .

Geographical location

The province of Abancay extends over the mountains of the Peruvian Central Cordillera between the Río Apurímac and Río Pachachaca . In the north of the province rises the 5235  m high mountain Nevado Ampay . This is located in the Ampay National Reserve.

The province of Abancay borders the Cusco region in the north, the Cotabambas province in the east, the Grau province in the south, the Aymaraes province in the southwest and the Andahuaylas province in the west .
