Location

The city is located 2,377 meters above sea level in the Andes on the east bank of the Río Marino in a side valley of the Río Apurímac . It lies at the southern foot of the snow covered peak Ampay , halfway on the road from Nazca to Cuzco .

history

Abancay already existed in pre-colonial times and was named after a flower resembling the white lily, native to the area, which was called Amankay in the Quechua Indian language . Upon their arrival in South America, the Spanish transliterated this word and named the place Abancay, Villa de los Reyes (i.e., "Abancay, City of Kings"). In the colonial era, Abancay was a major trading center. In 1874 the place was elevated to a city.

economy

Sugar cane is grown and processed in Abancay . Spirits are also produced in the town, which is also a small mining center. There are silver and copper mines in the area.

Personalities

A nationally known personality is the freedom fighter Micaela Bastidas , wife of José Gabriel Condorcanqui (called Tupac Amaru II ), who was born four kilometers north of the city.
