history
Abancay already existed in pre-colonial times and was named after a flower resembling the white lily, native to the area, which was called Amankay in the Quechua Indian language . Upon their arrival in South America, the Spanish transliterated this word and named the place Abancay, Villa de los Reyes (i.e., "Abancay, City of Kings"). In the colonial era, Abancay was a major trading center. In 1874 the place was elevated to a city.
