The region of Cusco [ ˈkusko ] (Spanish Región Cusco , Quechua Qusqu suyu ) is a region in the southeast of the Peruvian Andes . 1,316,700 people (2015) live in an area of 72,104.41 km². The capital is Cusco .
population
More than two thirds of the population are indigenous . Mestizos and Creoles (whites) are concentrated in the city of Cusco as well as the Quillabamba mining area . The most important languages are Quechua als (variant Qusqu-Qullaw , mother tongue of 54% of the population) and Spanish (43%). Cusco is one of the four regions of Peru in which the Quechua-speakers make up the majority. Quechua is mainly represented in the country; in the city of Cusco, Spanish dominates (69% to 29%).

geography
The country is extremely mountainous, the average altitude is 3399 meters above sea level, and snow-capped mountains such as Ausangate , Yañaloma and Salcantay reach heights of over 6000 meters. Laguna Huacarpay is one of the lakes .
There are many ruins in Cusco, including the most famous of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu .

The Cusco region is divided into thirteen provinces, which in turn are divided into 112 districts (as of 2019).
