The province Canchis is one of thirteen provinces in the Cusco region in South Central Peru . The province name is derived from the indigenous people of the Qanchis (Canchi).

The province has an area of ​​3999 km². At the 2017 census, there were 96,937 people in the province. In 1993 the population was 94,962, in 2007 96,937. The provincial administration is located in Sicuani .

Geographical location

The province of Canchis is located in the Andes , about 90 km southeast of the regional capital Cusco . It has a longitudinal extension in north-south direction of about 80 km and a width of up to 70 km. The Río Vilcanota, upper reaches of the Río Urubamba . The Cordillera Vilcanota , a glaciated mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera , with the 6384  m high Ausangate runs along the northern provincial border . On its southern flank lies the glacial lake Laguna Sibinacocha .

The province of Canchis borders on the province of Quispicanchi in the north, on the provinces of Carabaya and Melgar (both in the Puno region ) in the east, on the province of Canas in the southwest and on the province of Acomayo in the west .

Administrative division

Canchis Province is divided into eight districts. The Sicuani district is the seat of the provincial administration.
