The San Pedro district is located in the Canchis province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on November 28, 1912. It has an area of ​​56.1 km². At the 2017 census, 2846 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 3572, in 2007 it was 2974. The district administration is located in the 3489  m high village of San Pedro with 1361 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Pedro is just 16 km northwest of the provincial capital Sicuani . The road from Puno to Cusco runs along the Río Vilcanota. 3 km west-northwest of San Pedro is the Raqchi archaeological site.

Geographical location

The district of San Pedro is located in the Andean highlands in the central west of the Canchis province. The Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba) crosses the south of the district in a westerly direction. The 3,693  m high Quimsachata volcano is located on its north bank, immediately northwest of San Pedro . This had its last eruption 11,500 years ago. Lava fields extend over the volcano .

The district of San Pedro borders in the west on the district Tinta , in the north on the district Combapata and in the southeast on the district San Pablo .
