The Marangani District is located in the Canchis Province of the Cusco Region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on August 29, 1834 during the tenure of President Luis José de Orbegoso y Moncada . It has an area of 439 km². At the 2017 census, 9,600 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 11,574, in 2007 11,074. The district administration is located in the small town of Marangani at an altitude of 3698 m with 2887 inhabitants (as of 2017). Marangani is located on the Río Vilcanota , the upper reaches of the Río Urubamba , 11 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Sicuani .
Geographical location
The Marangani district is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme south of the Canchis province. The district is located 125 km southeast of the regional capital Cusco and 175 km northwest of Lake Titicaca . The Río Vilcanota crosses the district in a north-westerly direction. The national road 3S from Cusco to Puno runs through the district.
The Marangani district is bordered by the Layo district to the south, the Langui district to the west, the Sicuani district to the north and the Nuñoa district ( Melgar province ) to the east .
