The Nuñoa District is located in the Melgar Province in the Puno region in southeastern Peru . The district has an area of ​​2201 km². The 2017 census counted 8,815 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 11,379, in 2007 11,121. The district administration is based in the small town of Nuñoa, 4016  m high, with a population of 4,732 (as of 2017). Nuñoa is located 45 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Ayaviri .

Geographical location

The Nuñoa District is located in the Andean highlands in the northwest of the Melgar Province. In the north the area is bounded by a mountain range with peaks over 5300  m . The Río Quenamari (also Rìo Nuñoa or Río Grande) drains the area in a south-southeast direction to the Río Ramis (also Río Azángaro). In the south is Lake Ututo.

The district of Nuñoa is bordered to the southwest by the district of Santa Rosa , to the west by the districts of Marangani , Sicuani and San Pablo (all three in the province of Canchis ), to the north by the districts of Corani and Macusani (both in the province of Carabaya ), to the east to the Antauta district and, in the southeast, to the Asillo ( Azángaro province ) and Orurillo districts .
