The region of Puno [ ˈpuno ] (Spanish Región Puno , Quechua Punu suyu ) is a region in southern Peru . 1,415,600 people live in an area of 66,988 km². The capital is Puno .
population
More than three quarters of the population are indigenous . The most common mother tongues are Quechua (42%, variant Qusqu-Qullaw ), Spanish (29%) and Aymara (27%). This makes Puno the Peruvian region with the highest proportion of Aymara native speakers.

The region borders Bolivia to the east .
Within Puno, the Peruvian part is on Lake Titicaca .

On September 15, 2007, the meteoroid impact of Carancas occurred south of Lake Titicaca in the province of Chucuito .
