The province of San Román belongs to the administrative region of Puno and is located in the south of Peru . It was founded on September 6, 1926. It was named after Miguel de San Román (1802–1863), who was President of the Republic of Peru in 1862 and 1863.
The province has an area of 2278 km². The 2017 census counted 307,417 residents in the province. In 1993 the population was 168,534, in 2007 240,776. The administrative seat is Juliaca .
Geographical location
The province of San Román is located in the west of the Puno region and extends over the arid Andean highlands west of Lake Titicaca . The province has a maximum longitudinal extent in the WSW-ONO direction of about 108 km. In the northeast, the province reaches up to 8 km from the shores of Lake Titicaca. In the southwest the province extends to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The capital Juliaca is located in the northeast of the province.
The province of San Román borders the province of Lampa in the north, the provinces Azángaro and Huancané in the northeast and the province of Puno in the south . In the southwest, the province of San Román borders the regions of Moquegua and Arequipa .

The province of San Román consists of the following five districts. The Juliaca district is the seat of the provincial administration.
