The province of Carabaya belongs to the administrative region of Puno and is located in the south of Peru . It has an area of 12,266 km². The 2017 census counted 77,055 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 46,777, in 2007 73,946. The administrative seat is Macusani .
Geographical location
The province of Carabaya is located in the north of the Puno region, about 140 km north of Lake Titicaca . The longitudinal extension in NNE-SSW direction is 115 km, in WNW-ESE direction 95 km. The Cordillera Carabaya , a mountain range of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera , runs across the southwestern part of the province. In the north-east of the province, the Amazon lowlands extend from the mountains. The Río San Gabán and Río Inambari drain much of the province to the north. The northeast of the province is drained by the Río Candamo and Río Tavara to the Río Tambopata .
In the north, the province of Carabaya borders on the Madre de Dios region , in the east on the province of Sandia , in the south on the provinces of San Antonio de Putina , Azángaro and Melgar and in the west on the region of Cusco .

The Carabaya Province consists of 10 districts. The Macusani district is the seat of the provincial administration.
