River course

The Río San Gabán arises south of the small town Macusani at an altitude of about 4360  m at the confluence of the Río Niñahuisa and Río Chillimita . The source rivers of the Río San Gabán arise at heights of 5000  m in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . The river flows mainly in a northerly direction through the mountains. The Transoceánica trunk road (National Road 34B) follows the course of the river. The Río San Gabán passes Macusani at river kilometer 105. At river kilometer 65, the village of Ollachea is on the left bank of the river. At river kilometer 56 there is a weir on the river. Part of the river water is diverted to the San Gabán II hydropower plant and only returns to the river 12 kilometers down the valley. The village of Lanlacuni Bajo , administrative center of the district of San Gabán , is located 17 km above the mouth on the left bank of the river. The Río San Gabán finally flows into the Río Inambari, which flows to the northwest at an altitude of about 440  m .

Catchment area and hydrology

The Río San Gabán drains an area of around 3400 km². The western watershed forms the border with the neighboring administrative region of Cusco . In the southwest is the Cordillera de Vilcanota with the glaciated mountain range of the Quyllur Puñuna ( 5743  m ). To the east lies the small, glaciated mountain range Allincapac ( 5805  m ). The mean discharge of the Río San Gabán is 197 m³ / s. The Río San Gabán is the second largest tributary of the Río Inambari after the Río Araza .
