The Río Araza (also Río Marcapata ) is a 135 km long left tributary of the Río Inambari in southeastern Peru in the province of Quispicanchi in the administrative region of Cusco . It is the most water-rich tributary of the Río Inambari.

River course

The Río Araza rises at an altitude of about 4500  m in the north of the Cordillera Vilcanota on the southeast flank of the Huillolluni ( 5068  m ). The Río Araza initially flows 8 km in a south-southeast direction. It then runs 20 km to the east and 10 km to the northeast. On this section it takes up three tributaries from the right, which drain a glaciated part of the Cordillera Vilcanota to the north. From river kilometer 117, the Transoceánica trunk road (national road 30C) runs from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado along the course of the river. At river kilometer 111 is the place Marcapata , administrative seat of the district of the same name, above the southern river bank. The Río Araza now flows 10 km north, before turning northeast for the next 30 km. The remaining stretch of the river runs mainly in an easterly direction. At river kilometer 52 is the place Quincemil , administrative center of the Camanti district, on the left bank of the river. Larger tributaries on the middle and lower reaches of the Río Araza are Río Japumayo (left), Río Azulmayo (right), Río Nusiniscato (left) and Río Camanti and Río Nojonunta (both from right). The Río Araza finally flows into the Río Inambari at a height of about 350  m above the Puente Inambari road bridge .

Catchment area and hydrology

The Río Araza drains an area of about 4575 km². The northern watershed forms the border with the Madre de Dios administrative region , the eastern watershed the border with the Puno administrative region . In the north lies the catchment area of the Río Colorado , in the west that of the Río Alto Madre de Dios and in the east that of the Río San Gabán . In the south runs the glaciated Cordillera de Vilcanota mountain range, which is part of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera . The mean discharge of the Río Araza is 310 m³ / s.
