The Rio Alto Madre de Dios ( alto Spanish for "high" or "dominant") is the 122 km long right source river of the Río Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru in the administrative regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios .

River course

The Río Alto Madre de Dios arises at the confluence of the Río Pillcopata (right) and Río Piñi-Piñi (left) at an altitude of about 500  m , 3 km northeast of the municipality of Pillcopata . The right bank of the river is in the Cusco region for the first six kilometers. Otherwise, the river runs within the Madre de Dios region. Right at the beginning, the Río Alto Madre de Dios cuts through a more than 1500  m high ridge and reaches the eastern Voranden region. The breakthrough valley is called Pongo del Koñeq and is located at river kilometer 117. At its exit, on the right bank of the river, at the confluence of the Río Carbón, there is the settlement Atalaya . The nearby municipality of Salvación , administrative seat of the province of Manu , lies on the river of the same name, 3 km above its confluence with the Río Alto Madre de Dios. This flows for the next 30 km in a northerly, later in a north-northeast direction. At river kilometer 84 the Río Palotoa meets the Río Alto Madre de Dios from the left. This flows a short distance to the southeast, and then cuts through a low mountain range up to 650  m high at river kilometer 70 . For the remaining kilometers, the river flows in a north-easterly direction through the lowlands and finally reaches the Río Manú , with which it forms the Río Madre de Dios. The Río Alto Madre de Dios has several river arms along almost its entire course. The lower 30 km run along the southeastern park boundary of the Manú National Park .
