The Marcapata district is located in the Quispicanchi province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on January 20, 1869. It has an area of 1687.91 km². At the 2017 census, there were 4,307 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 4805 in 2007 4520. The district administration is located in the 3677 m high village of Marcapata with 679 inhabitants (as of 2017). Marcapata is about 70 km east of the provincial capital Urcos .
Geographical location
The Marcapata district is located in the southeast of the Quispicanchi province. The district extends over the upper catchment area of the Río Araza , a left tributary of the Río Inambari , on the eastern north flank of the Cordillera Vilcanota .
The Marcapata district is bordered to the west by the district Ocongate , in the extreme northwest of the district Kosñipata ( Province Paucartambo ) in the north and northeast on the district Camanti , on the southeast by the districts Ollachea and Corani (both in the province of Carabaya ) and in the south to the Pitumarca District ( Canchis Province ).
