The Pitumarca district is located in the Canchis Province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on November 11, 1907. It has an area of 1091 km². At the 2017 census, there were 8,091 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 6807, in 2007 it was 7068. The district administration is located in the small town of Pitumarca at an altitude of 3570 m with 4165 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pitumarca is about 40 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Sicuani . The archaeological site of Machupitumarca is 2 km northeast of Pitumarca.
Geographical location
The Pitumarca district is located in the Andean highlands in the far north of the Canchis province. The main ridge of the Cordillera Vilcanota with the 6384 m high Ausangate border the district in the north. To the southwest of this is the well-known Winicunca viewpoint. The Río Pitumarca , a right tributary of the Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba), drains the western and central part of the district to the west. The eastern part of the district with the lake Laguna Sibinacocha lies in the catchment area of the Río Salcca .
The Pitumarca district borders in the north on the districts Cusipata , Ocongate and Marcapata (all three in the province Quispicanchi ), in the extreme east on the district Corani ( province Carabaya ) and in the south and in the extreme west on the district Checacupe .
