The Cusipata District is located in the Quispicanchi Province of the Cusco Region in south-central Peru . The district was established on September 5, 1940. It has an area of ​​243 km². At the 2017 census there were 4695 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 5003, in 2007 it was 4755. The district administration is located in the small town of Cusipata, 3319  m high, with 1,449 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cusipata is located on the east bank of the Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba) 28 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Urcos . The highway from Puno to Cusco runs through the city.

Geographical location

The district of Cusipata is located in the western foothills of the Cordillera Vilcanota in the southwest of the province of Quispicanchi. The Río Vilcanota crosses the far west of the district in a northerly direction. Its right tributary Río Chillihuani flows through the east of the district. In the far northeast rises the 5435  m high Wasaqucha. To the south of this is the Winicunca viewpoint , which is 5200  m high.

The district of Cusipata borders in the west with the district Sangarará , in the northwest with the district Quiquijana , in the northeast with the district Ocongate and in the southeast and in the south with the districts Pitumarca and Checacupe (both in the province Canchis ).
