The Urcos district is located in the Quispicanchi province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​134.65 km². At the 2017 census, there were 10,614 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 12,398, in 2007 10,087. The district and provincial administrations are located in the small town of Urcos with 5968 inhabitants (as of 2017). Urcos is located about 43 km east-southeast of the regional capital Cusco .

Geographical location

The Urcos district is located in the Andes in the west of the Quispicanchi province. The city of Urcos is located on the left bank of the Río Vilcanota (upper reaches of the Río Urubamba) at an altitude of 3158  m . The Río Vilcanota crosses the district in a north-westerly direction.

The Urcos district borders in the northwest on the Caicay district ( Paucartambo province ), in the northeast on the Ccatca district , in the south on the Quiquijana district and in the west on the Huaro and Andahuaylillas districts .
