The Sangarará district is located in the Acomayo province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on February 23, 1861. It has an area of ​​86 km². The 2017 census counted 3485 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3992, in 2007 it was 3753. The district administration is located in the village of Sangarará at an altitude of 3769  m with a population of 1,391 (as of 2017). Sangarará is 9 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Acomayo .

Geographical location

The Sangarará district is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the Acomayo province. In the southeast, the district extends to the northern shore of the Laguna Pomacanchi and its outlet, the Quebrada Pata, which flows further east into the Río Vilcanota .

The district of Sangarará borders in the southwest with the district Pomacanchi , in the northwest with the district Acomayo , in the north and in the northeast with the districts Quiquijana and Cusipata (both in the province Quispicanchi ), in the southeast with the district Checacupe ( province Canchis ) and in the south to the Acopía district .
