The province of El Collao belongs to the administrative region of Puno and is located in the south of Peru . It has an area of 5601 km². The 2017 census counted 63,878 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 75,456, in 2007 it was 81,059. The administrative seat is Ilave .
Geographical location
The province of El Collao is located in the southwest of the Puno region, on the south bank of Lake Titicaca and extends over the arid Andean highlands south of the lake. In the south, the province extends to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . There the 5568 m high mountain Larjanco rises . The 4433 m high lake Laguna Vilacota is located on the southern provincial border. The Río Mauri forms its drain and flows in an easterly direction along the provincial border to Bolivia . The maximum length in north-south direction is about 147 km.
In the east, the province of El Collao borders on the province of Chucuito , in the southeast the border with Bolivia runs. In the southwest the province of El Collao borders on the regions of Tacna and Moquegua and in the northwest on the province of Puno .
Administrative division
The province of El Collao consists of the following five districts. The Ilave district is the seat of the provincial administration.
