The Pilcuyo district is located in the El Collao Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on December 11, 1961. It has an area of ​​152 km². The 2017 census counted 11,331 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 16,890, in 2007 14,151. The seat of the district administration is the 3836  m high village Pilcuyo with 1200 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pilcuyo is located 9.5 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Ilave .

Geographical location

The Pilcuyo district is located in the far northeast of the El Collao Province. It is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Titicaca . It has an almost 25 km long stretch of shore. The maximum longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is 20 km. The Río Ilave forms the northwestern border of the district. The river Río Zapatilla flows through the district and flows into Lake Titicaca.

The Pilcuyo district borders in the southeast on the neighboring province of Chucuito , in the south and in the west on the Ilave district .
