The Ilave District is located in the El Collao Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was established on December 12, 1991. It has an area of ​​917 km². The 2017 census counted 49,454 residents. In 1993 the population was 48,054, in 2007 it was 54,138. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the 3847  m high town of Ilave .

Geographical location

The Ilave District is located in the northwest of the El Collao Province. It extends from the southwest bank of Lake Titicaca west of the mouth of the River Ilave for about 66 km in a south-southwest direction to the northeastern foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The width is about 15 km. The river Ilave flows through the district in a predominantly northward direction.

The Ilave district borders in the east on the Pilcuyo district and the neighboring Chucuito province . In the south lies the Conduriri district , in the west the province of Puno .
