The province of Puno belongs to the administrative region Puno and is located in the south of Peru . It has an area of 11,497 km². The 2017 census counted 219,494 inhabitants in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 229,236. The administrative seat is Puno .
Geographical location
The province of Puno is located in the southwest of the Puno region, on the southwest shore of Lake Titicaca and extends over the arid Andean highlands west of the lake. In the south, the province extends to the Peruvian Western Cordillera . There the 5344 m high mountain Cerro San Miguel rises . The maximum length in north-south direction is about 127 km.
In the southeast, the province of Puno borders on the province of El Collao , in the southwest on the Moquegua region , in the north on the province of San Román and in the far north on the province of Huancané .
