The Pichacani district is located in the Puno Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district was founded on May 2, 1854. It has an area of ​​1638 km². The 2017 census counted 5889 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6149, in 2007 it was 5608. The seat of the district administration is the 3975  m high town of Laraqueri with 2221 inhabitants (as of 2017). Laraqueri is located 35 km south-southwest of the regional and provincial capital Puno . The Cutimbo archaeological site is located 15 km north-northeast of Laraqueri .

Geographical location

The Pichacani district is located in the central southwest of the Puno Province. It lies entirely in the catchment area of Lake Titicaca . The southeast is drained over the Río Blanco to the Río Ilave . The watershed to the Pacific runs along the western district boundary .

The district of Pichacani borders in the southwest with the districts Carumas ( Mariscal Nieto province ), Chojata and Ichuña (the latter two in the province of General Sánchez Cerro ), in the northwest with the district San Antonio , in the north with the district Puno , in the extreme northeast the districts of Chucuito and Platería and in the southeast to the district of Acora .
