The Carumas district is located in the Mariscal Nieto province of the Moquegua region in southwest Peru . The district has an area of ​​2256.31 km². At the 2017 census, 2366 residents lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 3554, in 2007 it was 4816. The district administration is located in the 2095  m high village of Carumas with 598 inhabitants (as of 2017). Carumas is located about 50 km northeast of the provincial and regional capital Moquegua . In addition to Carumas, the district also has the larger villages of Aruntaya (223 inhabitants), Cambrune (456 inhabitants), Somoa (205 inhabitants) and Titire.

Geographical location

The Carumas district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northeast of the Mariscal Nieto province. It has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of almost 100 km and a maximum width of about 40 km. The district runs along the south and east flanks of the 5408  m high Ticsani volcano . In the extreme northeast is the approx. 4535  m high reservoir Pasto Grande ( ) in the catchment area of the Río Coralaque, a left tributary of the Río Tambo . Its total volume at the beginning of March 2020 was 149.98 million m³, the useful volume was 111.09 million m³. In addition, the Tucari gold mine operated by Aruntani SAC is located in the far northeast of the district near Aruntaya ( ). In the extreme southwest, the Río Tambo runs a short distance along the northern district boundary to the west.

The Carumas district borders in the northwest on the districts of Quinistaquillas ( Province General Sánchez Cerro ), San Cristóbal and Cuchumbaya , in the north on the District Chojata (Province General Sánchez Cerro), in the east on the districts Pichacani and Acora (both in the Province of Puno ) , in the southeast to the Santa Rosa district ( El Collao province ), in the central south to the Cairani and Camilaca districts (both in the Candarave province ) and to the southwest to the Torata district .
