The Candarave Province is one of four provinces in the Tacna region in the extreme south of Peru . The province was founded in 1988 and has an area of 2261 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 6,102. In 1993 it was 9,238, in 2007 8,373. The administrative center is the small town of Candarave .
Geographical location
The province is located in the northwest of the Tacna region. It is located on the southwest flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The area is drained by the headwaters of the Río Locumba to the Pacific Ocean . The main river of the province is the Río Callazas . This has its origin in the northwest of the province in the mountain lake Laguna de Suches and ends in the lake Laguna Aricota . This was caused by a landslide. Its water seeps through the natural barrier or reaches a hydropower plant down the valley via a pressure pipe. Several volcanoes rise in the province of Candarave, including the 5550 m high Yucamani .
The province of Candarave borders in the south with the province Jorge Basadre , in the east with the province Tarata , in the northeast with the province El Collao (region Puno) and in the north and west with the province Mariscal Nieto (region Moquegua).
