The province of Tarata is one of four provinces in the Tacna region in the extreme south of Peru . It has an area of 2820 km². At the 2017 census, 6,094 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 8181, in 2007 it was 7805. The administrative center is the small town of Tarata .
Geographical location
The province of Tarata is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera , 65 km from the Pacific coast. The area is drained by the Río Sama River. The province borders in the north on the provinces Candarave and El Collao (region Puno), in the east on Bolivia and in the south and west on the province Tacna .
Administrative division
The province of Tarata is divided into eight districts. The Tarata district is the seat of the provincial administration.
