The Jorge Basadre Province is one of four provinces in the Tacna region in the extreme south of Peru . The province was founded in 1988 and has an area of ​​2929 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 10,773. In 1993 it was 12,175, in 2007 it was 9872. The administrative center is the small town of Locumba . In the province is the Toquepala Mine , where copper and other metals are mined in open-cast mining. The province was named after Jorge Basadre Grohmann (1930–1980), a Peruvian historian.

Geographical location

The province is located in the west of the Tacna region. It extends over an approximately 30 km wide stretch of coast on the Pacific coast . The longitudinal extension in NNE-SSW direction is 85 km. In the north-northeast, the province extends to the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The desert-like, arid area is traversed by the Río Locumba .

The province of Jorge Basadre borders the Moquegua region to the west, the Candarave province to the north and the Tacna province to the east .

The Jorge Basadre Province consists of the following three districts. The Locumba district is the seat of the provincial administration.
