The Locumba district is located in the Jorge Basadre province in the Tacna region in the extreme southwest of Peru . The district has an area of 968.99 km² (according to other sources 846 km²). The 2017 census counted 2256 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1378, in 2007 2159. The district and provincial administrations are located in the small town of Locumba . Locumba is located at the confluence of the Río Salado and Río Cinto, the two source rivers of the Río Locumba , at an altitude of 559 m . Locumba has 1001 inhabitants (as of 2017) and is located about 70 km northwest of the regional capital Tacna . The area is largely uninhabited. In addition to Locumba, there is the Caserio Pampa Sitana with 488 inhabitants and the Anexo Alto Camiara with 107 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The Locumba district extends over the desert-like coastal highlands in the central part of the Jorge Basadre province. It extends in the north to the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . In the south, the district boundary runs along the national road 1S ( Panamericana , section between the cities of Moquega and Tacna ). The district has a longitudinal extension in SSW-NNE direction of about 32 km and a width of about 26 km. The Locumba district borders on the Ite district to the south, the Moquegua district ( Mariscal Nieto province , Moquegua region ) to the west, the Ilabaya district to the north and the Inclán district ( Tacna province ) to the east .
