The Mariscal Nieto Province is located in the Moquegua region in southern Peru . The province has an area of 8672 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 85,349. In 1993 the population was 57,939, in 2007 72,849. The administrative seat is the city of Moquegua . The province was named after Domingo Nieto (1803-1844), Marshal (Spanish: mariscal ) and President of Peru.
Geographical location
The province of Mariscal Nieto extends 160 km inland. In the south-west it reaches within a few kilometers of the Pacific coast . In the south-west of the province, in the coastal region, there is a desert-like, arid climate. The north-east of the province lies in the Peruvian Western Cordillera , which has several volcanoes in this area . The Moquegua River flows through the province.
The province of Mariscal Nieto borders on the Arequipa region in the west, the General Sánchez Cerro province in the northwest, the Puno region in the northeast and the Tacna region in the southeast . The province of Ilo separates the province of Mariscal Nieto in the southwest from the Pacific Ocean.

The Mariscal Nieto Province consists of the following six districts. The Moquegua district is the seat of the provincial administration.
