The Torata district is located in the Mariscal Nieto province of the Moquegua region in southwest Peru . The district founded on November 12, 1823 has an area of 1793.37 km². At the 2017 census, there were 6198 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 7897, in 2007 it was 6591. The district administration is located in the 2195 m high village of Torata with 830 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The Torata District is centrally located in the Mariscal Nieto Province. The district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera northeast of the provincial and regional capital Moquegua . The headwaters of the Río Moquegua drain the area in a south-westerly direction. Copper ore is mined in the Cuajone mine. The archaeological site of Cerro Baúl is located about 5 km southwest of Torata . The landscape is dry with desert vegetation. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced in the river valleys.
The Torata district borders the Moquegua and Samegua districts to the south , the Omate , Quinistaquillas (both in the province of General Sánchez Cerro ) and Carumas to the north, and the Cairani and Camilaca districts (both in the Candarave province ) to the east .
