The district of Cuchumbaya is located in the Mariscal Nieto province of the Moquegua region in southwestern Peru . The district founded on January 31, 1944 has an area of 67.58 km². At the 2017 census there were 761 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 1745, in 2007 it was 1990. The district administration is located in the 3120 m high village of Cuchumbaya with 287 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cuchumbaya is 55 km north-northeast of the provincial and regional capital Moquegua . In addition to Cuchumbaya, there are also the larger towns of Sacuaya with 248 inhabitants and Quebaya in the district.
Geographical location
The district of Cuchumbaya is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northwest of the province of Mariscal Nieto. The district has a length of almost 18 km in a west-east direction. In the far east of the district, the 5408 m high Ticsani volcano rises . The Río Putina, a right tributary of the Río Carumas, runs along the northwestern district boundary to the west. The area lies in the catchment area of the Río Tambo .
The district of Cuchumbaya borders the district of San Cristóbal in the north and the district of Carumas in the south .
