Jan Ludvig (born September 17, 1961 in Liberec , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current scout , who played 314 games for the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League between 1980 and 1981 (NHL) on the position of the right winger . Ludvig celebrated his greatest career success at the beginning of his career when he won the European title with the Czechoslovak U18 national team at the U18 European Junior Championship in 1979 . His son John was selected by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft .
Career
Ludvig comes from the youth system of his home club HC Liberec , after which he started playing ice hockey at the age of five. After completing his training there, he moved within Czechoslovakia to TJ CHZ Litvínov , where he made his debut in the first team of the club in the country's top division in the 1980/81 season . The 19-year-old played three games. The striker then fled the communist system via Austria in the direction of Canada . On the North American continent Ludvig continued playing ice hockey. He was briefly active in the 1981/82 season for the St. Albert Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) before moving to the higher-class Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Kamloops Junior Oilers . With 65 scorer points in just 37 missions, he also drew the attention of other teams to himself, so he moved to the United States at the end of the season.
The Czechoslovak ended the 1981/82 season with the Wichita Wind from the Central Hockey League (CHL), which he supported in three playoffs in which he scored two goals. At the beginning of the 1982/83 season he was still under contract in Wichita. His speed and good training for the majority game continued to arouse desires and so the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League (NHL) secured the services of the free agent offensive player. After 17 scorer points in 51 missions, Ludvig acclimatized himself to the NHL at the beginning of the 1983/84 season . He reached 54 scorer points at the end of the season, and another 31 were added in the following season. After that, injuries put the striker out of action again and again, which also affected his offensive production. Between 1985 and 1987, he did not play more than 45 NHL games in any of the two playing years and also did not reach more than 16 points. At times, the Devils Ludvig used in the American Hockey League (AHL) on their farm team Maine Mariners . In May 1987 they finally separated from him completely when they exchanged him for Jim Korn from the Buffalo Sabers .
In the service of the Sabers, Ludvig's injury problems remained unchanged. He completed only 28 games for the team within two years by the end of the 1988/89 season before he had to end his professional career in the summer of 1989 at the age of 27. Ludvig then stayed in North America and worked as a scout for the New Jersey Devils from 1994 to 2018 . Since summer 2019 he has been working in this role for the Boston Bruins in the NHL and the Czech second division club HC Benátky nad Jizerou . He was also repeatedly employed for his home club in Liberec. In addition to a brief interlude as a player in the 2001/02 season , he has been working there since 2016 in the coaching staff of the first division club. Ludvig has his main residence in Kamloops, Canada and is also dedicated to his great passion, motocross . He is a multiple participant in the ErzbergRodeo .

At the international level, Ludvig represented his country of birth Czechoslovakia at the U18 European Junior Championships in Poland in 1979 . There he led the team as the best striker of the tournament to win the first title since it was first played in 1968 . He was also named to the tournament's all-star team.
