The Czechoslovak national ice hockey team was one of the best teams in the world, while the Soviet Union dominated the international ice hockey scene. The Czechs and Slovaks often fought for second place with the Swedes , and sometimes they were able to beat the Soviet players . Between 1971 and 1986 they also won the Izvestia Cup four times .
In 1950 the national ice hockey team, whose players were considered the "golden generation" after two World Cup victories in 1947 and 1949 and the winner of a silver medal at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , suffered a bitter setback: shortly before they left for the 1950 World Ice Hockey Championship in London 13 players from the national squad were arrested. In a political show trial, they were sentenced to between three months and 15 years in prison for espionage and high treason for allegedly planning not to return from their trip. Some players had broken health after their imprisonment, others emigrated afterwards. It took 22 years for another Czechoslovak national team to become world champions in ice hockey.
