The 5th World Ice Hockey Championship and the 16th European Ice Hockey Championship took place from February 1 to 8, 1931 in Krynica in Poland . Compared to the World Cup last year , there was a completely different mode. There was no more World Challenge this year, instead all teams were challenged from the start of the tournament. Ten teams took part in this championship. There was initially one elimination round, with the two winners going to the next round while the losers had to go to the placement round. In the second round, the remaining eight teams met against each other in four pairings. The winners went straight to the final round, while the four losers went to a round of hope. The two winners of this round of hope then also reached the final round of the top six, while the two losers fought for places 7-10 together with the losers of the elimination round. Both the final round and the placement round were played in the league system.
Canada was again the winner of this World Cup, ahead of the USA . Canada won their fifth world title at the fifth world championship and remained unbeaten at an ice hockey world championship, but they lost their first point with the 0-0 victory over Sweden . The best European team was the team from Austria , which won the bronze medal and at the same time was able to achieve its second European title.
