The 25th Ice Hockey World Championship and the 36th European Ice Hockey Championship , which took place in Oslo ( Norway ) from February 28 to March 9, 1958 , saw the return of Western ice hockey nations to World Cup play.
venue
At the IIHF Congress in 1956, the world championship was awarded to Vienna . The construction of the Wiener Stadthalle , which had been planned for some time, began in 1953, but was delayed and at the 1957 congress Austria informed that the hall would not be available at the beginning of the World Cup. Therefore, the World Cup was awarded to the substitute candidate Oslo.
Attendees
The world championship trophy from 1953 to 1959
After the boycott of the previous year , all of the top teams again took part in the tournament this year, including defending champions Sweden , vice world champions USSR , Czechoslovakia , Canada and the USA . Nevertheless, with only eight registered teams, the number of participants was comparatively low, so that no B tournament was held this year either. The German ice hockey association did not send a team to this year's championship matches due to the poor performance of the national team in the run-up to the World Cup. The outstanding team of the tournament were the Whitby Dunlops, who played as the Canadian national team at this tournament and achieved their 17th title win for Canada. For its part, the USSR won the fourth European championship in history.
