The 84th men's ice hockey world championship of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF was the ice hockey world championship of the year 2021 . The top division tournament with 16 national teams took place from May 21 to June 6, 2021 in Riga , the capital of Latvia .

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated delayed start of many national and international leagues, the top tournament was postponed to the latest date of the year and ended for the first time in June. The tournament should have taken place in Minsk ( Belarus ) and Riga (Latvia). Given the political situation in Belarus after the controversial re-election of Belarusian President Aljaksandr Lukashenkaas well as the COVID-19 pandemic, the IIHF declared on November 18, 2020 that the World Cup could not be held as planned according to the current status. The Latvian government asked the IIHF to withdraw the tournament from Belarus, which took place on January 18, 2021, also under pressure from sponsors and politicians. On February 2, 2021, the IIHF decided that the city of Riga will be the sole venue for the World Cup. The two venues are only 150 meters apart. In addition, all 16 teams could be accommodated in one hotel so that travel from venue to venue could be avoided.

The seven lower division tournaments were scheduled for March to May 2021. On November 18, 2020, the IIHF Council canceled these tournaments due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, a total of 55 countries took part in the World Cup tournaments - including Malaysia , the Philippines and Singapore for the first time - which would have meant another high. As a replacement for Division IA, Slovenia organized a tournament for interested teams from Divisions IA and IB under the name Beat Covid-19 tournament from May 15 to 21 .

Participants, venues and periods

The top division tournament was awarded to Minsk and Riga in 2017. The seven tournaments of divisions I to IV were to take place in 2021, with one exception, at the locations where the corresponding tournaments of the men's ice hockey world championship would have taken place in 2020 , which had already been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic were. Only the tournament of Division II Group A should take place in Beijing ( People's Republic of China ) in 2021 and not, as planned for 2020, in Zagreb ( Croatia ). This tournament would have served as a test for the ice hockey competitions at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022 .

In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The total number of games is 64 games.

Due to the cancellation of the lower divisions, promotion and relegation were suspended.

The 84th Men's Ice Hockey World Championship took place between May 21 and June 6, 2021 in the Latvian capital Riga . Originally, Latvia and Belarus narrowly prevailed against Finland with Helsinki and Tampere at the annual IIHF congress from May 18 to 20, 2017 in Cologne . Belarus had previously hosted the 2014 World Cup , Latvia the 2006 tournament . The tournament was awarded to two countries for the fourth time, but for the first time to a country within and a country outside the European Union .

Controversy over the event in Belarus

The International Ice Hockey Federation came under international criticism for planning to hold the World Cup in the Belarusian capital Minsk in 2020, despite the protests in Belarus against the rule of the dictator Aljaksandr Lukashenka. Lukashenka is accused of serious crimes against humanity . In October 2020, the Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš declared that they wanted to host the World Cup with a different partner or that the competition would not be held. In December 2020, 49 members of the European Parliament signed an appeal initiated by Viola von Cramon-Taubadel , which spoke out against holding the Ice Hockey World Championships in Minsk.

In January 2021, the President of the International Ice Hockey Federation René Fasel met the Belarusian ruler Lukashenka. Fasel not only hugged Lukashenka in front of the cameras, but also posed for a photo with Dzmitryi Baskau , the president of the Belarusian ice hockey association . Baskau is accused of being involved in a beating attack on Raman Bandarenka , who died as a result of the injuries. For this reason, Baskau was banned from entering Latvia . Fasel responded to the criticism with the words: “I am sorry if this leads to the interpretation that I would accept the events and the repression in Belarus. But I wanted to use this special relationship with Lukashenka to do something good. So that the World Cup leads to a kind of reconciliation between the government and the opposition. ”At the same time, Fasel showed no understanding for the political criticism of the meeting. He was convinced that he had done nothing wrong and questioned whether sanctions and boycotts could achieve anything.

The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for the Ice Hockey World Cup in Minsk to be withdrawn. He said literally: “That would be the greatest PR gift for Lukashenka and a devastating signal to the demonstrators. I hope the organizers will see that too. That is not a question of political calculation, but of attitude. "

Due to the massive human rights violations in Belarus, the sponsors Beiersdorf AG (with their Nivea brand ), Škoda Auto and Liqui Moly decided not to support the World Cup if it was to take place in Minsk. Fasel complained that the sponsors had received letters from the Belarusian opposition which, in his opinion, contained partly untrue claims. On January 18, 2021, the IIHF decided to withdraw the tournament from Belarus. This decision was justified with paragraph 9 of the IIHF statutes, which enables the IIHF to withdraw the hosting of a tournament if the health or freedom of the participating athletes, officials, spectators and media representatives is not guaranteed.

Flag change after Ryanair incident

In response to Ryanair flight 4978 , the city of Riga replaced the red and green flag of Belarus with the Belarusian flag with white and red colors, which is used by the Belarusian opposition, on May 24, 2021 . Belarus then expelled all Latvian diplomats from the country. As a backlash, Latvia expelled all Belarusian diplomats from the country. The IIHF then asked the mayor of Riga to remove the flags of the ice hockey federation and the world championship around the white and red flags of the Belarusian opposition or to use the red and green flag again.

TV broadcast

In Germany, all seven preliminary round matches of the German team were broadcast live on Sport1 . In addition, 18 preliminary round games, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, as well as the game for third place and the final were broadcast. Sport1 thus broadcast a total of 31 of the 64 games.

In Switzerland, the SRF broadcast all Swiss games from the preliminary round, the entire final round and additional top games from the preliminary round. Austrian radio broadcast selected games from the preliminary round, two quarter-finals and both semi-finals and finals on ORF SPORT + .

Attendees

Spiky , the mascot of the 2021 World Cup

After the cancellation of the 2020 World Cup , the 14 best teams from the 2019 World Cup and the two first-placed teams in Division I Group A 2019 took part. The hosts had a guaranteed starting place, but also qualified in terms of sport.

(*)Due to the exclusion of Russia by WADA because of manipulated data from the laboratory in Moscow for four years from the Olympic Games and World Championships, the Russian national team competed under the name ROC ( Russian Olympic Committee ) and the ROC team flag. The 1st piano concerto by Pyotr Tchaikovsky was played as a substitute for the national anthem.
