A world championship
Postage stamp from the Deutsche Bundespost on the occasion of the World Cup
The A-World Championship of 1975, which was held in Munich and Düsseldorf, was marked by a lot of boredom. On the one hand, this was due to the fact that these title fights took place without a host. The Federal Republic of Germany had missed promotion in the previous year and therefore had to compete in the B group in Sapporo . But also the fight for the title and the duels against relegation did not create any real tension. There were also hardly any close matches; The differences in performance between the respective direct counterparties were too clear. Only the fight for the bronze medal brought some drama to the tournament. The course of this World Cup therefore led to a reform of the A group following these title fights. The IIHF decided to allow professional players as early as the coming World Cup in order to bring about a greater performance density and, in particular, to bring the Canadians back on board. After this decision, they announced their return to world ice hockey in 1977. In order to free up space for the Canadians, the A group was promptly increased from six to eight teams. This not only saved the US team from relegation, but also surprisingly brought the West German team up as second in the group. As a result, to the delight of the Dutch and Italy , there was no relegation from the B group.
The title holder was the USSR for the 14th time (also the 17th European title).
